Recommended College Application Criteria

Posted on August 17th, 2015

KIS Jeju follows the American best counseling practice of advising Grade 12 students to apply to a range of colleges from most selective to less selective. This practice gives students the opportunity for admission to their first choice college; to secure multiple college acceptances; and, to provide as much certainty as possible for at least one college acceptance. Family Connection (Naviance) refers to this range as: Far Reach, Reach, Possible, Likely and Safety colleges. American college admissions committees vigilantly measure an applicant’s level of commitment to their college. If they know a student has not applied to more than 10 colleges, they feel the applicant is a student who has thoroughly researched and judiciously selected their college as a good match.

We recommend all KIS Jeu students apply to no more than 10 colleges as specified below to ensure a balanced list of college applications. Any specific college could be classified differently for each KIS Jeju student. KIS Jeju counselors are well versed in how to determine a student’s classification.

College Application Range

‘Far Reach’ and ‘Reach’ Category
Students are permitted 3-4 counselor determined ‘Far Reach/Reach’ category applications. In this category, a student’s statistics (GPA and/or standardized test scores) may be at or below the desired college’s admission profile. Reach schools admit a very low percentage of their applicants even though most are ‘admissible’ based on score statistics alone.
  • Far Reach: 5-15% chance of admission
  • Reach: 20-30% chance of admission

‘Possible’ Category
Students are permitted 3-4 counselor determined ‘Possible’ category applications. In the ‘Possible’ category, the student’s statistics (GPA and/or standardized test scores) are within the range of the college’s admission profile. The student has a 30-60% chance of admission.

‘Likely’ Category
Students are permitted 2 counselor determined ‘Likely’ category applications. In the ‘Likely’ category, the student’s statistics (GPA and/or standardized test scores) meet, or are above the college’s admission profile. The student has a 60-80% chance of admission.

‘Safety’ Category

Students are permitted 1 counselor determined ‘Safety’ application. In the ‘Safety’ category, the student’s statistics (GPA and/or standardized test scores) are usually well above the college’s admission profile. The student has a 80-95% chance of admission.

Students wishing to submit more than 10 college applications may do so if the first 10 applications meet the KIS Jeju Recommended College Application Criteria.

College Counselor Role
College counselors can help with:
  • Creating a list of colleges to research
  • Narrowing down an existing list
  • Understanding how to learn about the admission requirements
  • Sending your high school transcripts, and letters of recommendation to colleges
  • Providing strategies of how to ask for letters of recommendations and communicating with college representatives, teachers and peers
  • Providing emotional support

Student Role
Mr. Eric Furda, the Dean of Admissions at University of Pennsylvania says: ‘…selecting the ideal college (university) requires a good deal of hard work. You should think about your goals and aspirations. It is important for you to assess the elements of an education that will assure your success. It is an active process that requires you to read and to question and to visit various campuses.’ In working towards this, students are responsible for finding a university environment that will lead to productivity and happiness:

Self-awareness:
  • Reflect on and evaluate your goals and values.
  • Assess your academic strengths, learning style, special talents and skills that distinguish you.
  • Complete the senior portfolio and resume on Family Connection (Naviance).

Research:
  • What is the academic criteria for admissions to the school?
  • Do they require letters of recommendation? If so, how many?
  • Where can you obtain the application?
  • Do you need to write an essay? Answer short answers? Prepare a resume? Prepare a portfolio?
  • Does the school offer the major you are interested in?
  • Can you connect with college representatives, current students, or alumni?

Consult:
  • Meet the application deadlines both for KIS Jeju and the university.
  • Communicate with your teachers, counselor and admission representative.
  • Clarify with your parents how much money they can contribute towards your education.
  • Inform your counselor of your final results.
